GNOMON

Measures hours of unequal duration. In ancient times the period between the rising of sun and its setting was divided into 12 equal parts - hours. The length of these hours thus varied according to the season, being longest at midsummer (summer solstice) and shortest at midwinter. The gnomon was in use from the most of ancient civilizations.
