SCAFFOLDING OF PROPARTHENON

This model was designed to show how the marble blocks used in the construction of the Proparthenon were prepared and lifted into place. The construction site visible in front of the temple platform was where the final preparation of the drums and the capitals, and in fact all the structural members, took place, of the building which was raised in about 490 B.C. To position the prepared marble sections that would go to build the Proparthenon it was judged necessary to construct a scaffolding to support the cranes, pulleys and ropes that would be used to raise the marbles, placing them in their proper positions. In addition, the transport of the huge blocks of marble special corridors and inclining planes were also used.
