POLYCADIA

The sub-divided wheel of Philon, an engineer from Alexandria, is known in two variations: the tympanon and the polykadia. The polykadia has been the most useful form of the instrument, known as sub-divided wheel. It is easier in its construction, lighter and it has the possibility of pumping the water from great depth in a larger quantity and in a shorter period of time. The polykadia became extremely well-known and was widely used. It bears wooden vessels, incorporated in the periphery of the wheel. It is still used today in many parts of the world.
